Global Crop Yields at Risk as Potassium Depletion Looms

Potassium deficiency in crops has emerged as a major threat to global agricultural productivity, posing a significant challenge to sustainable food production. Potassium is an essential nutrient for plant growth and involves several physiological processes, including enzyme activation, photosynthesis, and water management. However, soil potassium depletion has increased, reducing agricultural output and quality.

 

According to a study published in Nature Food, agricultural soils in many locations worldwide are losing potassium faster than replenishment efforts. This disparity raises questions regarding sustainable agriculture techniques. The report provides a series of recommendations to remedy this issue.

 

The findings reveal a global potassium deficiency impacting around 20% of agricultural soils, with some locations experiencing more severe shortages. South-East Asia, Latin America, Sub-Saharan Africa, and East Asia are among the most affected regions, owing mostly to increased agricultural practices. These locations are being recommended to undertake initiatives to increase potassium availability in soils.

 

Co-author Professor Mark Maslin of UCL Geography stressed the importance of potassium in sustaining global crop yields, which are important for feeding the world’s population. He emphasized that potassium depletion harms food security, affecting millions worldwide. Maslin emphasized the need to tackle this ignored issue, particularly as the global population expands.

 

Farmers frequently employ potash as a potassium fertilizer to restore their crops. However, the price of potash might fluctuate, affecting its availability. The global market for potassium fertilizers, worth almost £12 billion, is dominated by twelve countries, including Canada, Russia, Belarus, and China, which produce 80% of the world’s raw potash.

 

According to the researchers, potash prices increased by 500% in April 2022 compared to the previous year. This spike was linked to many factors, including increased fertilizer demand, rising gasoline prices, post-pandemic economic recovery attempts, different government interventions, and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

 

Russia and Belarus are large potash exporters, accounting for around 42% of the global supply. However, the UK, US, Canada, and EU imposed import sanctions in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, disrupting global potash supplies and compounding the price spike.

 

Following the initial price increase, the cost of potash has dropped by about 50%, while it remains expensive. This continued price increase raises concerns about farmers’ capacity to get an appropriate fertilizer supply to sustain food production under the current system.

 

Dr. Peter Alexander, co-author from the University of Edinburgh, stressed the importance of potash price volatility for the global food chain. He emphasized the importance of potassium in preserving crop production and raised concern about vulnerable populations’ access to affordable potash.

 

The researchers stressed the importance of improved potassium management methods and an effective international coordination framework. Unlike nitrogen and phosphorus, which have established national and international laws governing their long-term management, soil potassium lacks similar policies. This lack of regulation emphasizes the importance of establishing appropriate governance structures to manage this critical crop nutrient.

 

Global potash consumption reached 45 million metric tons in 2021 and is expected to climb to 69 million by 2025, with new projects in Belarus, Canada, Russia, Australia, Eritrea, and the United Kingdom. Potash mining raises human rights and environmental concerns, resulting in millions of tons of sodium chloride salts that can contaminate land and water.

 

More research is needed to determine how potassium fertilizer runoff affects ecosystems. The lead author, Will Brownlie, emphasized the importance of greater monitoring of potash mining’s environmental impact and integrated nutrient management. The researchers recommended:

 

  1. Setting up a global assessment of current potassium stocks and flows to identify the most at-risk countries and regions.
  2. Establishing national capabilities for monitoring, predicting, and responding to potassium price fluctuations.
  3. Helping farmers maintain sufficient soil potassium levels with further research about the yield implications of limited potassium in various crops and soils.
  4. Evaluating the environmental effects of potash mining and developing sustainable application practices.
  5. Developing a global circular potassium economy that minimizes the use and maximizes the reuse and recycling of the nutrient.
  6. Increased intergovernmental cooperation through the UN and other agencies is needed to develop global policy coordination akin to what’s been developed for nitrogen.
