Today is #palestinian prisoner awareness day.
On April 17, 1974 Mahmoud Bakr Hijazi became the first Palestinian prisoner to be released in a prisoner exchange. Thousands remain imprisoned, many without charge or trial, with no guarantee of legal protection, due process, or freedom of movement.
Imprisonment was a fundamental pillar of apartheid in South Africa. It is also central in the Israeli apartheid regime’s oppression of the Palestinian people.
This is not only about prisons. It is about a system that restricts movement, silences voices, and fragments a people.
As the Global Sumud Flotilla sails toward Gaza, it carries more than aid. It carries a demand: Freedom. Justice. Dignity. Some of us can cross borders, sail freely, and rely on consular protection if detained.
Palestinians cannot.
