FAFO For The Holidays

With the FAFO movement, mainly pertaining to the observations of MAGA supporters getting “woke”, in full swing for the holidays, we figured it was important to clue the greater American public (and world) in on what this term means. It was considered the most popular new word by Washington Post in 2022.

The “FAFO” (short for “Fuck Around and Find Out”) era in American politics is a term used to describe the period during which voters, especially those supporting former President Donald Trump, faced what some perceive as the consequences of their electoral choices. This term gained traction as a cultural shorthand for the idea that decisions, particularly in voting, bring tangible outcomes, some of which may contradict voters' expectations.

The phrase has been adopted by critics of Trump-era policies and MAGA (Make America Great Again) supporters, often with the term “MAGA Karens” used to highlight perceived hypocrisy or misplaced outrage from some Trump voters who later experienced dissatisfaction with policies or societal changes they helped enable. In this context, “FAFO” implies that such voters have been forced to reckon with the repercussions of political shifts, whether related to economic policies, healthcare access, social justice, or broader governance.

The concept underscores a broader cultural conversation about accountability and civic responsibility, posing the question of how voters' choices align with their lived experiences and long-term goals. It serves as a reminder of the profound implications of collective political actions. The “FAFO era” often reflects on examples where voters who supported Donald Trump experienced dissatisfaction with the consequences of policies or actions they may not have fully anticipated.

Here are a few examples:

Affordable Care Act (ACA) Misunderstandings

Many Trump voters expressed surprise or frustration when they realized that their support for repealing the ACA could result in losing their health coverage. A widely noted example is the misunderstanding that the ACA and “Obamacare” were the same. Some voters, particularly in rural and economically disadvantaged areas, relied heavily on ACA benefits, such as Medicaid expansion, but opposed “Obamacare” due to political branding without realizing the implications of a repeal.

Department of Education and Federal Oversight

Trump-era proposals to significantly reduce the Department of Education's influence or funding left many voters concerned, especially in rural areas that depend on federal support for schools. The idea of decentralizing education appealed to some conservatives initially but raised alarms when the lack of oversight threatened programs like Title I funding, which supports low-income schools.

Economic Fallout from Tariffs

The trade wars initiated under Trump, particularly with China, resulted in tariffs that heavily impacted American farmers and manufacturers. While the administration provided subsidies to mitigate these effects, many in farming communities expressed regret as markets for their goods shrank and prices for equipment and materials rose.

Social Security and Medicare Worries

Although Trump frequently promised to protect Social Security and Medicare, budget proposals during his administration hinted at potential cuts. This generated anxiety among older voters, a significant part of Trump's base, who depended on these programs for financial and medical stability.

Pandemic Response Consequences

The federal response to COVID-19 under the Trump administration, including mixed messaging on mask mandates and vaccines, led to dissatisfaction among some voters who felt the government failed to manage the crisis effectively. Businesses suffered, and health systems were overwhelmed, impacting Trump voters in both urban and rural areas.

The above examples illustrate how initial support for specific policies or leadership styles can evolve into regret or dissatisfaction when the practical consequences directly affect voters' lives. The “FAFO” narrative thus invites reflection on how informed voting and critical analysis of policy proposals can align with long-term personal and community interests.

For MAGA supporters, the “FAFO” effect could manifest in the following ways:

  1. Family Estrangement: Family members who strongly oppose Trump’s policies or actions may distance themselves from MAGA-supporting relatives. This is particularly common in cases where political disagreements extend into broader social issues like LGBTQ+ rights, abortion, or racism, making family gatherings feel hostile or unwelcoming.
  2. Loss of Shared Traditions: The tension may lead to cancellations of shared holiday traditions, such as large family dinners or gift exchanges, as people prioritize avoiding conflict over maintaining family unity.
  3. Personal Reflection and Isolation: Being excluded or shunned can prompt some individuals to reflect on their political views, though others may double down, viewing their exclusion as evidence of societal intolerance.
  4. A Shift in Cultural Dynamics: For some, these divisions reveal deeper cultural and generational rifts. Younger family members, often more progressive, may voice strong opposition to older MAGA-supporting relatives, exacerbating the divide.

The “FAFO” dynamic in this context suggests that extreme or uncompromising political stances can lead to personal repercussions, such as strained relationships and holiday isolation. It also highlights broader questions: How can families bridge these divides? At what point do political beliefs outweigh familial bonds? And what role does personal accountability play in healing such fractures? These are questions families across the U.S. continue to grapple with in an era of heightened political polarization.

Is a spiritual awakening next on the list of “To-Dos” for MAGA supporters now that they will have more time on their hands to reflect during the holidays?
