DNC Recap From the Left and Right Perspectives: Center Perspective With No “Center Stage”

As a registered Independent voter my whole life, I’ve always been about compiling both right and left perspectives to get the full picture of what I’m looking for in a presidential candidate. So I’m writing, and re-writing this article, with the help of AI and several left, right and center news sources. The final touches always done by a human hand.

Summary of This News Coverage on the 2024 DNC & Voter/Influencer Reactions:

  • The DNC appeared to strike a balance in addressing issues, but may have lacked the nuance to fully appeal to moderate/independent voters.
  • The convention featured a diverse range of Democratic voices, but some felt it did not adequately engage with or represent alternative viewpoints.
  • Independents felt the DNC was too focused on criticizing Republicans and lacked concrete solutions to national challenges.
  • The DNC's emphasis on rallying the base left some Independents questioning the party's appeal beyond its core supporters.
  • Specific issues like the conflict in Gaza, free education, and immigration reform (issues Independents care about) were not addressed in depth.
  • There were criticisms from the right about the DNC's exclusion of Republican perspectives and perceived biased media coverage.
  • Social media influencers discussed the phenomenon of neighbors taking down Trump signs and replacing them with Biden/Harris signs.

The main themes at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago last week appeared to have been emphasizing party unity, downplaying internal divisions, making favorable economic claims and broadly criticizing the previous Republican administration. What didn’t happen during the convention was addressing issues on immigration, foreign policy, or other divisive issues within the party. The context suggests the Democrats were aiming for a more moderate, centrist messaging.

CNN noted that Harris' acceptance speech on the final night of the convention offered voters “a return to pre-Trump normalcy” and a “clean break from the Trump era”. And NPR highlighted that Democrats made a concerted effort to present their values as “mainstream” and appeal to a broad audience, with speakers like Oprah calling for “decency and respect” in the election.

The convention showcased the party's rising stars, like Buttigieg, Shapiro, and Moore, who are likely to be future presidential contenders. But how did people with close ties to inner politics, along with voters, felt how it went? We’ll look at the Democratic take first which will not be all “sunshine and rainbows.”

The Left’s Main Criticisms from Liberal and Center News Media Perspectives (Surprisingly leading the “what’s missing” charge over conservative news sources):

These perspectives and research has been compiled by PBS, BBC and NPR, separately, but are compiled here for full scope of what was lacking.

1.) Avoiding discussions of “identity politics” and issues like diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). The convention largely sidestepped these topics, even though they have been major points of debate within the Democratic party. This suggests the Democrats are trying to appeal to the broadest possible audience and avoid alienating certain voters.

2.) Downplaying internal party divisions and disagreements. The convention glossed over the policy differences between moderates and progressives within the Democratic party, such as on issues like healthcare, free college tuition, and the influence of money in politics. The party appeared to be trying to present a united front.

3.) Lack of focus on the issue of immigration. The convention did not give much attention to the surge in undocumented border crossings, which has been a liability for the Biden administration and a key line of attack from Republicans. The topic was largely absent from the convention programming.

4.) Exaggerated or misleading claims about the economy and job creation under Democratic presidents. While the data shows Democrats have overseen more job growth since 1989, the convention speeches did not provide full context about the role of Congress and other factors.

5.) Broad, vague criticisms of the Trump administration's record on crime, without fully substantiating the claims. While violent crime did spike in 2020, the convention rhetoric painted with a broad brush.

While the Democratic critiques seemed a little deeper from within liberal resources that typically aim to find alignment within perceived like-minded and same-team “party players”, we are given a high-level perspective of what republicans thought was missing, as reported by Pew Research, The Economic Times and Gazette.

The Right’s Main Criticisms From A Conservative and Centered News Media Perspective (Surprisingly focused on criticizing biased media and inflated television ratings of the DNC, not immigration reform or policies):

1.) The DNC lacked representation of prominent Republican voices and perspectives. The convention was described as a “gala event for the Democrats” that excluded Republican viewpoints. Although there were not prominent Democratic speakers at the RNC either.

2.) High TV ratings and “iconic” speeches what it takes to become president? Republican news sources questioned whether Democratic figures like Obama and Michelle Obama truly convinced the U.S. audience, implying the DNC's messaging may have been seen as partisan or lacking broader appeal.

3.) Republicans believe that mistakes or inaccuracies in news coverage stem from an intentional desire to mislead audiences. Some news media outlets have argued the DNC received overly positive or uncritical coverage from the media. I believe the left and centered news sources I pulled from the “Left’s and Center’s Criticisms” in the 5 bullet points above do address more critical concerns.

4.) Republican critiques suggested the DNC focused too heavily on rallying the Democratic base. There was no appeal to independent or undecided voters, with concerns about the party's overall enthusiasm and unity. They are not wrong with this critique here as Independents, often voting Libertarian and Green Party, believe in free education, free healthcare (like Canada) and Freeing any enslaved peoples (like Palestine currently undergoing the biggest genocide of this century).

5.) Calling out the news media bias. Given the partisan divide in views towards the media, Republicans may have argued the DNC did not adequately address or counter the perception among conservatives that the news media has a liberal bias and is untrustworthy.

Some quick statistics from Pew Research show Republicans, and especially strong Trump supporters, consistently express more negative sentiments about the news media and are far more likely than Democrats to think that mistakes in news reports happen because of an intention to mislead audiences.

Republicans are about twice as likely as Democrats to say that a major reason for significant mistakes in news stories is that there is a desire to mislead audiences (60% vs. 32%).

Republicans who strongly support Trump are more likely than other Republicans to say mistakes in news coverage stem from mal-intent or carelessness, with two-thirds (67%) saying an intention to mislead is a major reason for errors.

I think it is important to delineate “Trump Republicans” from honest and hard-working Republicans as more a more Democrats and Independents across the nation are seeing their neighbors take down their “Trump for President” signs from their front yards.

Here’s a Quick Report From Our Social Media “News for the People, By the People” Around U.S. Citizens Taking Down Trump Signs In Their Yards, Replacing with Biden, Now Harris Signs (highlighting influencer comments on social media):

Reddit: A user on the r/politics subreddit posted a comment about seeing neighbors replace Trump signs with Harris signs, sparking a conversation about the political shift in the area.

Twitter: Several conservative influencers and pundits have discussed the topic on Twitter. For example, right-wing commentator Candace Owens shared a tweet about a neighbor taking down her Trump sign and replacing it with a Biden sign. Later,

Some users have shared experiences of neighbors replacing Trump signs with Harris signs, with many expressing their thoughts on the change.

Instagram: Some conservative influencers on Instagram have also discussed the topic. For example, conservative commentator Allie Beth Stuckey shared a post on her Instagram story about a neighbor taking down her Trump sign and replacing it with a Biden sign.

TikTok: A search for the hashtag “#TrumpSigns” on TikTok yields several videos of users discussing their experiences with neighbors taking down Trump signs.

A search for the hashtag “#TrumpToHarrisSigns” on TikTok yields several videos of users discussing or showing neighbors replacing Trump signs with Harris signs.

Some users on social media have shared videos of themselves confronting their neighbors about the issue.

While the above occurrences are interesting, I was left wondering how the centered or Independent point-of-view was fit in during the intensive DNC programming last week. The short answer to that was, it wasn’t. The Independent voter viewpoint can best be represented by the thousands of people standing outside of the Democratic National Convention. The Independent voter is an individual easily described as one moved and guided by a strong and internal moral compass.

As reported by TruthOut.org, scenes from inside the United Center in Chicago were showing “a party in unison, outside the building, uncommitted delegates dedicated to attaining a ceasefire in Gaza and an arms embargo against Israel staged a sit-in, demanding that a Palestinian person be allowed to take the stage at some point during the week. Early on Thursday morning, those delegates and their allies were told by the DNC that no such speaker would be given the chance to address the convention.”

Palestinian, and U.S. voting citizen from Hawaii, Fatima Abed criticizes the DNC for silencing Palestinian voices while giving Israeli families the floor, calling it discrimination and re-traumatizing. While Harris’ speech at the DNC last week was a clear call for a ceasefire, her sentiments fell way short in addressing the atrocities that have been happening in Palestine and to its people.

80,000 tons of explosives (the equivalent of over 2 nuclear bombs) were dropped on Gaza, far surpassing the bombing of Dresden, Hamburg, and London combined during World War II. Read that back to your friends when you get a chance.

Moving on to other issues that Independent voters care about.

PulseDNA Provides Some General Insights on 3  Key Issues Independent Voters Care About, but Fell Short During The 2024 DNC:

Conflict in Gaza: The DNC briefly touched upon the need for a peaceful resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. However, there was no significant focus on the issue or the massive ongoing suffering inflicted on the Palestinian people.

Free Education: The DNC emphasized the importance of affordable education, but there was no specific mention of free education. Instead, they discussed plans to make higher education more accessible and affordable for all Americans.

Immigration Reform: The DNC expressed support for comprehensive immigration reform, focusing on a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants and strengthening the border security without using divisive language. There were no extensive details provided on immigration reform.

The DNC, at first blush, appeared to strike a balance in addressing key issues, but may have lacked the nuance to fully appeal to moderate, or what I call “fully awakened”, voters. While the convention featured a diverse range of Democratic voices, there were concerns that it did not adequately engage with or represent alternative viewpoints.

Conversely, voices from hundreds of Independents we collected through social media, felt the DNC was too focused on criticizing Republicans and lacked concrete solutions to national challenges.

Overall, the focus at the DNC seemed fixed on rallying the base left, leaving some Independents questioning the party's appeal beyond its core supporters.
