Empowering Comfort: The Story of VKTORI and the “No-Nip Tee” Shirt

In a world where comfort often takes a backseat to fashion, Keona Moy is on a mission to change the narrative. As the founder of VKTORI, a brand specializing in braless apparel with neuro-inclusive design, Keona is redefining comfort and self-expression.

Through a candid conversation with her at The Collective in Seattle, I was able to get the scoop on Keona’s vision, mission, and plans for the future of VKTORI and the innovative “No-nip tee” garment that does away with uncomfortable bras.

Catching up with Keona and her movement of a brand was nothing short of a breath of fresh air. A reminder that we may live in a society with work cultures that superficially wave the “diversity and equity for all”-banner, but we can still do something about it.

The Stories That Informed the VKTORI Shirt

Keona's journey began with a personal struggle to balance professionalism and comfort in the workplace. She recognized a need for clothing that allowed individuals to feel confident and comfortable without sacrificing their authenticity. Keona emphasizes, “Neuro-inclusivity and braless apparel help folks show up as their full selves.” VKTORI's target audience includes individuals seeking comfort and self-expression, especially women navigating societal expectations and judgment.

Much of the inspiration for Keona’s “burn the bra, but not the shirt”-movement (as I lovingly put it) was from the real stories she collected from her customer base and friends.

“One of my friends had a bad eczema flare up so she could not wear a bra because her skin was inflamed. One day, there were people over at her house and she went to the kitchen because she needed some water so she said hello to everybody to be polite. An elder gentleman pulled her over to the side and told her she should put a bra on because it was inappropriate. So here she was, being shamed for choosing her comfort in a situation where she already felt so uncomfortable in her body. This is one of many examples of how folks are judged for showing their authentic selves,” Keona reflected in our chat.

The second story shared was of a customer Keona interviewed. The female fan of the #NahBra movement recalled a time when she didn't wear a bra to high school and a male classmate loudly pointed out that she should be wearing a bra in front of all her classmates. As Keona was telling me this story, I got angry. To me, it was as if the high school boy in the story was inferring to an aggressive, overly-sexual, or rude intention being expressed by the woman as a female student. We’ve seen the latest fashion magazines championing photos of men wearing high-end suites with no shirt and their “man-boobs” hanging out. And only in the fashion arena can women do the same. But should this be considered a “fashion statement” still or should we simply be allowed to express our most authentic selves?

An article by ScienceDirect further explains a point to be made here. “Across human cultures, there exists a sexual double standard. Whereas young men are encouraged to ‘sew wild oats' (Crawford & Popp, 2003; Hadfield, 2011), young women and girls are at risk of slut shaming, female genital cutting, and honor killings (Dogan, 2016; Gruenbaum, 2005; Tate, 2016) for the same behaviors.” These double-standard truths swirled in my mind as Keona was telling me her brand’s story and what it means for the advancement of women having a “seat at the table”.

Keona reflects on the brand's purpose, stating, “We believe in self-sovereignty, which honors the authority you have over your life.” VKTORI's mission is to empower individuals to embrace their unique selves, whether it's going braless for comfort or wearing a push-up bra for confidence. The brand aims to create a supportive community where individuals feel accepted and comfortable in their skin.

Statement and Mission of the “No-Nip Tee” Shirt

At the heart of VKTORI's mission is the now grass-roots movement #NahBra and, of course, the shirt. Keona explains, “The ‘no-nip shirt' symbolizes neuro-inclusivity and the freedom to express oneself authentically without judgment or societal norms dictating appearance.”

Designed with these stated principles, the “no-nip shirt” allows individuals, including those with ADHD or sensory sensitivities, to feel comfortable and confident in any setting. I divulged to Keona that being an HSP (highly sensitive person) and very allergenic, I wanted to celebrate the idea of wearing a t-shirt, feeling comfortable, and not being judged for looking “inappropriate” just because bras don’t always feel good against my body.

The “no-nip shirt” embodies VKTORI's commitment to empowering individuals to embrace their full selves. Keona emphasizes, “It's about honoring and accepting your ‘flaws' with a resounding ‘Yes, this is ME'.” By challenging societal norms and advocating for self-sovereignty, VKTORI aims to create a world where individuals can express themselves freely and authentically.

Future Product Line and Expansion Plans

Looking ahead, VKTORI has ambitious plans for expansion and innovation. Keona reveals, “We're talking to three designers to improve our product line and launch another pre-order campaign, possibly on Kickstarter.” The brand seeks to enhance existing products, such as the no-nip tee, and explore new offerings tailored to individuals seeking maximum comfort and support and ideating around different padding designs.

Keona shares insights into VKTORI's future endeavors, stating, “We're exploring innovative alternatives to traditional undergarment cups, focusing on breathability and comfort.” With a commitment to comfort and innovation, VKTORI is poised to revolutionize the apparel industry and empower individuals to embrace self-care and freedom of expression.

As Keona continues to lead VKTORI on its journey, her passion for empowering women to bring their “full authentic selves to the table” is unwavering. Through VKTORI and the #NahBra ideology she is building, Keona is not just creating clothing; she's fostering a movement—one that celebrates the feminine figure and honors her for showing up completely, as herself.
